Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt has expressed his disappointment at the manner in which Shubman Gill got out on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test match between Bangladesh and India at Chattogram.
Butt said that Gill gets out in such a careless way after he is well set at the crease and just when one feels like they are watching the legendary Mark Waugh or Damien Martyn bat, he tends to throw away his wicket.
“It was careless. You play sweep in Test cricket and give away a catch at slip. Shubman Gill looks so good, the moment you feel like you’re watching a Mark Waugh or a Damien Martyn, he gets out,” Salman Butt said on his YouTube channel.
At the same time, the former opener has also came up with a valuable piece of advice for Gill, urging the youngster to make the most of his opportunities instead of being satisfied only by scoring 30-40 runs.
“It’s weird. You can’t score these 30-40 runs for long. If you’re getting consistent chances, you need to make the most out of them. You have shots at the front, you have time, you need to enjoy your game,” he said.
Opening the innings along with the stand-in captain KL Rahul, Shubman Gill did get a good start as he scored 20 runs off 40 deliveries and was also involved in a 41-run stand for the first wicket along with Rahul before a needless sweep shot ended his stay in the middle.
On the second delivery of the 14th over bowled by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, Gill attempted a paddle sweep. Nonetheless, the ball did not make good contact with his bat and a thick top edge and went straight into the hands of Yasir Ali at leg slip.
After the youngster’s dismissal, India went on to lose two quick wickets before valuable contributions from Cheteshwar Pujara, Shreyas Iyer and R Ashwin helped them post a mammoth total of 404 runs on the board.
