India’s emerging pace sensation Umran Malik showcased a terrific performance with the ball in hand in the ongoing second One Day International against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday, December 7.
While Umran cleaned up the No.3 batter Najmul Hossain Shanto with a 151 kmph thunderbolt earlier, he then went on to break a dangerous partnership between Mahmudullah Riyad and Mehidy Hasan Miraz who looked threatening to take the hosts to a competitive total.
Umran Malik celebrates after dismissing Mahmudullah Riyad
Umran Malik was brought back into the attack in the 47th over with the hope of breaking this dangerous-looking seventh-wicket stand and he delivered instantly. On the very first delivery, the 23-year-old bowled a shortish delivery outside the off stump line as Mahmudullah attempted to loft one over extra cover with the aim of clearing the boundary.
Nonetheless, the batter was completely beaten by the pace and failed to time the ball well as it took a big outside edge of his bat. At one point, it appeared as if the ball would comfortably beat the keeper, but that was not to be as an alert KL Rahul showed a great presence of mind behind the stumps by diving to his right and completed a one-handed stunner.
Umran Malik’s joy knew no bounds as he celebrated the dismissal triumphantly. A shell-shocked Mahmudullah Riyad took a long walk back to the pavilion for 77 runs. The Men in Blue heaved a sigh of relief as they finally succeeded in breaking the 148-run seventh wicket stand between him and Mehidy Hasan.

Despite losing the toss and being put into field first, India had Bangladesh on the mat at 69/6 and at one point in time it appeared that they could be chasing a manageable target to stay alive in the series. However, that was not to be as Mahmudullah and Mehidy had other ideas and together they counter-attacked the Indian bowlers. Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten till the very end scoring an outstanding 83-ball 100 as Bangladesh finished their innings at 271/7.
